Watching an account without following it
Following is a public act, shows up in their follower list, and still leaves you dependent on the algorithm surfacing their posts. Neither half of that is necessary.
What following actually costs you
Your handle appears in their followers, they get a notification, and their content enters your feed — where Instagram decides whether to show it to you at all. For monitoring purposes it is visibility in the wrong direction.
Manual checking does not scale
Two accounts checked daily is manageable. Ten is not, and the ones you skip are the days something happens. Stories in particular punish irregular checking, because the window closes in 24 hours.
Scheduled monitoring
Add the public handle, choose an interval, and each check records what changed: new Stories saved before they expire, new posts logged, posts that were edited or deleted flagged, followers gained and lost.
No follow, no viewer-list entry, no notification on their side.
Reasonable uses
Competitor tracking, brand and press monitoring, keeping an eye on a public figure, or a parent watching a child's public account. Monitoring someone who has asked you to leave them alone is not one of them.
