How long Instagram Stories last
Twenty-four hours from posting, to the minute. After that it disappears for everyone except the person who posted it.
The 24-hour clock
Each frame expires 24 hours after that frame was posted, not after the first one. A Story added to through the day therefore disappears in stages.
Where expired Stories go
Into the poster's private archive, if they have archiving on. Only they can see it, and they can delete it whenever they like. Adding a Story to a highlight is the only way to keep it publicly visible.
What a viewer can reach afterwards
Nothing, unless it was highlighted or you saved it while it was live. There is no public URL that survives expiry, and no tool can retrieve one — anything claiming to recover expired Stories is fabricating.
The only real answer: capture it in time
Watcholy checks monitored accounts on an interval and saves new Stories as it finds them, so the 24-hour clock stops being your problem. Anything captured stays in your archive after Instagram deletes the original.
