The airplane mode Story trick, tested

It does not work reliably, and the failure mode is the worst one: you think you were invisible and you were not.

The claimed method

Load your Story tray, switch on airplane mode, watch the cached Stories offline, then close the app before reconnecting. The theory is that with no connection, no view can be reported.

Why it fails

Instagram queues the view event locally and sends it when connectivity returns. Force-closing the app sometimes drops the queue and sometimes does not, and the app also syncs on relaunch.

You cannot tell afterwards which happened, because you cannot see the other person's viewer list.

Its other limits

Only Stories already cached in the tray are playable, so it never works for an account you do not follow — which is usually the case that people want it for.

The reliable version

Load the public Story with no Instagram session attached. There is nothing to queue and nothing to sync, because your account was never part of the request.

Watcholy only works with public Instagram accounts. It cannot access private profiles, direct messages, or anything Instagram does not already show publicly.

Frequently asked questions

Did it ever work?
Occasionally, years ago, before offline event queuing became standard. It has not been dependable for a long time.
Does clearing the app cache help?
No, and it can log you out for nothing.
What about deleting the app after?
Unreliable, and a lot of effort compared with just not using your session.

Let Watcholy do the watching
